In the video below and the video on the right, you will see Grace Ruga evaluating a cat and describing the various features of this cat.
Note that in this video, Grace is demonstrating how CFA judges have been requested to evaluate the cat's ears. Other associations may not choose to handle the ears in this same manner. Grace also quotes an earlier standard for value of color. Refer to the page on Coat/Pattern for how the different associations evaluate color and pattern. |
Evaluating a Curl at a ShowWhen showing a Curl, there are 100 total points in each association , however, the different associations have a slightly different point system. On the previous pages we have discussed these differences. If you seriously plan to breed and show American Curls, you need to know how to evaluate the different characteristics the judges will be looking at and the value the Standard gives to each characteristic for the association(s) you will be showing in. Hopefully, the pages, photos and illustrations on this site will help you evaluate what is a good show quality cat, what cats you should be including in your breeding program and what cats are best suited to become a new family member for at a new home.

The video below with David Mare in this final ring is also on the page discussing the body, but we added it here again because it's a great summary of how a CFA judge will evaluate an American Curl.
Below are pages from the 2016 CFA Breed Presentation to help CFA judges to compare scoring. These pages were copied directly from the power point presentation so quality isn't great. One slide includes a graph chart to provide a better visual comparison of category point structure. The purpose of the graphs and charts is to provide judges (and breeders) with a better comparison of the point value of different features. You will see a pie chart on the first page of each feature. The text in the slide is a little soft. The 2016 AC Breed Presentation is available online at

The slide on the right with the bar chart was used to provide a visual comparison of the different scoring factors. The columns are Gold = total points. Red = Ears. Purple = Body. Green = Head. Brown = Coat & Color. The last two bars are combining the red for ears + purple for body and red for ears + blue for eyes + green for head.
