  • Evaluating a Curl
This a video we found on Utube of David in a Final ring discussing the overall features of this young American Curl.  This was this girl's first show as an adult cat.  It's a great evaluation of the Curl.

Our compliments to David for acknowledging the degree of difficulty for breeders to produce Curls with really good ears.

Body

Text to be added later.

All 4 associations break the body into 4 categories:
(1) Torso & Neck
(2) Size & Boning
(3) Legs & Feet, and
(4) Tail Length

Torso & Neck

CFA: Semi-Foreign rectangle, length of 1-1/2 times the height at the shoulder, medium depth of chest and flank.
Neck: medium

Legs & Feet
Size & Boning
Tail Length
Body - total 25 points
The total points for the body is second only to total points for ears.  The total points for the ears is 30 points (CFA).  The body is 25 total points for CFA and 30 points for TICA.    The breakdown for both associations for body is:
  • Torso & Neck for CFA = 9 points.  Toro for TICA = 10 points.
  • Size and Boning for CFA = 6 points.  Size/Musculature for TICA = 10 points.
  • Legs/Feet for both CFA and TICA = 5 points.
  • Tail Length for both CFA and TICA = 5 points.

The torso and neck is a total of 9 points in CFA.  10 points for TICA.  When you think about it, that's nearly 10% of the total points for the cat.  When you add size & boning, legs & feet and tail length, it's obvious that this warrants some serious discussion
The BODY characteristics are as follows:
Torso Shape: semi-foreign rectangle, length one and one-half times height at shoulder, medium depth of chest and flank.
Size: intermediate with allowances for larger males.
Muscular: Moderate strenght and tone, flexible.
Tail:  flexible, wide at base, tapering, equal to body length.
Legs:  length medium in proportion to body, set straight when viewed from front or rear.  Medium boning, neither fine nor heavy.
Neck:  medium
Feet:  medium and rounded

In this photo, David Mare is evaluating a number of features.  This is how the judges will hold a cat to look at torso, body structure, musculature, length, coat, overall appearance and proportion of the cat.  You should take the time at home to get your show cats comfortable with being stretched in this same manner so they will not be alarmed in the show hall.  It's important that a show cat is comfortable being stretched and elevated in this same manner.  Don't wait until you get your cat into a loud, busy show hall to stretch your cat.  Allowing this stretch also shows the judge how the cat has a sense of comfort being held by strangers.
